3!...2!...1!...

Happy New Year from Samarahan, Malaysia! It's almost noon here January 1st, whereas back home people are probably just now getting dressed to go out. I wasn't able to make it to Kuching to catch some fireworks, but I heard booms and saw flashes all around the campus here. January 1 is a public holiday in Malaysia so no classes. I'll normally have class only Tues-Thurs, and I hope to take advantage of four-day weekends by traveling.

Below is a picture of the fireworks above Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers. In 1997 they surpassed the Sear's Tower as the world's tallest buildings, then they were surpassed in 2003 by a building in Taipei. They're still the the tallest twin towers in the world and a recognizable symbol of KL.
